Volleyball Hitting Drill: Bucket Ball

This drill teaches hitters to use disguised roll shots as a strategic offensive option. By approaching aggressively and then softening the attack into a target zone, players develop deception, touch, and accuracy. It reinforces the importance of variation in attacking to keep defenses guessing.

This volleyball hitting drill trains hitters to disguise attacks and execute effective roll shots by targeting a ball cart or bucket for accuracy.

Drill Setup

  • Players: On one side — setter, middle back passer, right-side hitter, and left-side hitter; on opposite side — right and left blockers and a server near a ball cart (“bucket”).
  • Court: Full court with a visible target (bucket or ball cart) placed on defense’s side.
  • Equipment: Volleyballs, net, ball cart or large bucket.
  • Roles: Server initiates play, passer receives, setter sets, hitters roll shot into the bucket.

Drill Instructions

  1. Server delivers an easy serve to the middle back passer.
  2. Setter transitions to the net while the passer delivers a controlled pass.
  3. Setter sets alternately to the right-side and left-side hitter.
  4. Hitter makes an aggressive approach but finishes with a roll shot aimed into the bucket/ball cart on the opposite court.
  5. Track how many successful roll shots land in the bucket.
  6. Continue alternating hitters each repetition.
  7. Suggested reps: Each hitter should attempt 8–10 roll shots per round; run for 6–8 minutes or until a set number of successful shots are made.

Drill Variations

  • Team Competition: Pair hitters on each side to work together, racing to place a set number of balls into the bucket.
  • Target Zone Expansion: Use floor cones or zones if no ball cart is available.
  • Deception Focus: Require hitters to swing aggressively a few times, then mix in roll shots to train disguised attacking.

Drill Coaching Points

  • Aggressive Approach: Hitters should always approach hard to disguise the roll shot.
  • Contact Point: Emphasize soft hand contact and controlled wrist action for accuracy.
  • Setter Role: Setters should alternate evenly between right and left hitters.
  • Pass Quality: A strong pass keeps both hitters in play.
  • Common Game Situation: Trains hitters to use roll shots effectively against deep or out-of-system defenses, keeping opponents off balance.

This is an excellent offensive drill for teaching hitters how to add variety and deception to their attacking toolbox.
