This volleyball pepper drill develops ball control and consistency by combining multiple contact types in a partner sequence.

Drill Setup

  • Players: Pairs of players working together
  • Equipment: 1 volleyball per pair
  • Court: Can be run in open space or across a full court with multiple pairs

Drill Instructions

  1. Players form pairs with one volleyball.
  2. Player A begins by down balling the ball to Player B.
  3. Player B executes the following sequence:
    Dig/pass to self
    Left fist contact to self
    Right fist contact to self
    Set to self
Down ball back to Player A
  4. Player A then repeats the same sequence before returning the ball.
  5. Drill continues with players alternating the full sequence.
  6. Suggested reps: Perform 8–10 sequences per player, or run for 6–8 minutes total.

Drill Variations

  • Simplified: Remove fist contacts for beginners.
  • Advanced: Add overhead passes, rolls, or controlled tips into the sequence.
  • Competition: See which pair can complete the most consecutive sequences without error.

Drill Coaching Points

  • Encourage players to self-correct touch strength and angles.
  • Stress controlled tempo—not rushing between contacts.
  • Remind players to stay balanced and low when digging.
  • Push players to use proper technique on each contact type, not just “get it over.”
  • Common Game Situation: Mimics unpredictable rallies where players must react with varied contact types to keep the ball in play.

This is a flexible pepper variation that works well as a warm-up or a skill-sharpening drill for all levels.
