Drill Setup

  • Players: Middle blocker, right side blocker, left side blocker on both sides of the net (6 blockers total).
  • Waiting Players: Behind each blocker on the 10-foot line, doing abdominal strengthening exercises while waiting to rotate.
  • Coach: Positioned to call blocking assignments and control tempo.

  • Equipment: Volleyballs (optional for advanced reps).

Drill Instructions

  1. Coach calls out “middle,” “right,” or “left.”
  2. Middle blocker reacts by either:
    Blocking alone in the middle.
Using footwork to close the block with the right or left side blocker.
  3. Middle blocker resets to the ready position before the next call.
  4. Players behind the blockers rotate in when signaled by the coach, replacing the front row blockers.
  5. Suggested reps: Perform 10–12 calls per middle blocker or run for 8–10 minutes total.

Drill Variations

  • Add a volleyball toss from the coach after each call to practice blocking live balls.
  • Use a setter and hitter on the opposite side for game-like timing.
  • Incorporate double or triple block scenarios for advanced groups.

Drill Coaching Points

  • Emphasize quick, efficient footwork for middle blockers (crossover or shuffle step).
  • Stress timing the jump with outside blockers for a sealed block.
  • Encourage verbal and visual communication between blockers.
  • Middle blockers must reset quickly to be ready for the next play.
  • Common Game Situation: Replicates live play where middles must read the setter, move laterally, and coordinate with teammates to shut down outside attacks.
