This drill teaches players how to properly cover their hitters after an attack. It emphasizes anticipation, positioning, and teamwork to keep rallies alive when facing strong blocks.
This volleyball coverage drill trains players to cover their hitters, react to blocked attacks, and maintain rallies through proper defensive positioning.
Drill Setup- Players: 6 players in standard rotation on one side (receiving team)
- Blockers: 6 blockers total, with 2 in each blocking zone (right front, middle front, left front) on the opposite side
- Coach: Positioned with volleyballs to initiate play
- Court: Full court
- Coach tosses a ball to the receiving side, initiating play.
- The receiving side runs a pass-set-hit attack.
- With 6 blockers across the net, most attacks will be blocked back.
- The receiving team must cover the hitter and dig up the blocked ball.
- Continue rally until the ball is dead.
- Encourage the receiving team to earn 3 successful coverage plays in a row before rotating positions.
- Suggested reps: Run for 8–12 minutes or until each player has rotated through all positions at least twice.
- Require three consecutive cover plays before rotation.
- Vary block strength: Use fewer blockers for beginners, or 6 blockers for advanced teams.
- Add scoring (e.g., 1 point per successful cover and attack continuation).
- Emphasize coverage positioning: players must read the hitter and anticipate block rebounds.
- Reinforce hustle and quick reactions to save blocked balls.
- Encourage loud communication during cover situations.
- Hitters should be reminded that coverage is part of the attack plan.
- Common Game Situation: Replicates live matches where hitters frequently face double or triple blocks, requiring teammates to cover and extend rallies.
This is a perfect team coverage drill for teaching the importance of anticipation and teamwork after an attack.
