  • Coaches: 2 coaches positioned to initiate free balls or down balls
  • Court: Full court with the 10-foot line as a boundary (balls landing inside are out)
  • Equipment: Volleyballs, net
  • Roles: Coaches feed balls, setters set, players attack and defend

Drill Instructions

  1. Coach initiates play with a free ball or down ball to one side.
  2. The receiving team passes the ball to their setter.
  3. The setter sets one of the two players behind the 10-foot line.
  4. Attacking player executes a down-ball attack over the net.
  5. Rally continues until the ball is dead, with the winning side earning 1 point.
  6. Any ball that lands inside the 10-foot line is out of bounds.
  7. Continue until one team reaches the predetermined score (e.g., 10–15 points).
  8. Suggested reps: Play 2–3 games of 8–10 minutes each, rotating players between roles.

Drill Variations

  • Add a Blocker: Introduce one blocker per side to increase difficulty for attackers.
  • Targeted Attacks: Require hitters to aim for deep corners or seams.
  • Scoring Twist: Award 2 points for kills that land untouched in-bounds behind the 10-foot line.

Drill Coaching Points

  • Attack Technique: Ensure hitters make contact behind the 10-foot line.
  • Defensive Positioning: Defenders must stay low, balanced, and ready to dig.
  • Footwork: Hitters should move their feet quickly into position before swinging.
  • Communication: Players must call for the ball on both offense and defense.
  • Common Game Situation: Replicates back-row attacks and defensive rallies where down balls play a key role in extending points.

This drill works well as a competitive game-like drill to sharpen down ball attacking and defensive digging.
