This volleyball drill teaches players how to get into a free ball offense.

Free Ball: Pass, Set, Cover, and Catch

Setup

1.  6 players on one side of the court

2.  Coach with a passing line on opposite side
3.  Players waiting behind serving line to rotate on

Instructions

1.  Coach tosses a ball to the passing line

2.  Player passes the free ball over the net
3.  Setter yells, "free ball," and transitions to the net
4.  Players pass the ball to the setter
5. Setter sets to a front row player (one of the hitters)
6.  Hitter approaches and catches the ball
7.  Players who are not hitting the ball should cover their hitter
8.  Players return to defensive  base positions
9.  Repeat and rotate when signaled by coach

Variations

1.  Instead of catching the ball, have the hitters tip or hit the balls over the net (more advanced)

Coaching Points

1. Watching for correct transitions

2. Making sure if players are not the one hitting, that they are covering correctly
