Drill Objective

Develop controlled defensive digging, accurate self-setting, and disciplined placement attacking across the net in partner pairs.

Drill Setup & Court Layout

  • Players: Pairs (2 players per group). Multiple pairs can line up along the net.
  • Court: Net divided into 2–3 stations per court.
  • Equipment: 1 volleyball per pair.
  • Positioning: Players stand 8–10 feet off the net directly facing each other across the tape.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Serve/Initiation: Player A initiates with a controlled standing roll shot or down-ball over the net directly at Player B.
  2. Dig & Self-Set: Player B passes (digs) the ball straight up to themselves above head height, then takes a second touch to set the ball to their own hitting approach.
  3. Controlled Attack: On the third touch, Player B jumps or stands to drive a controlled down-ball over the net back to Player A.
  4. Continuous Cycle: Player A executes the same 3-touch sequence (Dig to self → Set to self → Attack over net).
  5. Cooperative Scoring: Challenge pairs to reach 10, 15, or 20 consecutive controlled cycles without a drop.

Variations & Progressions

  • Distance Progression: Start at the 10-foot line and progressively back up to the 20-foot and baseline depths as ball control improves.
  • One-Touch Speed Pepper (Advanced): Remove the self-set touch; Player A digs to self, sets over net → Player B digs directly back.
  • Weak-Hand / Off-Hand Only: Require attackers to alternate left- and right-hand attacks to build non-dominant hand coordination.

Key Coaching Points

  • Absorb on the Dig: Use a low platform with a relaxed rebound angle to keep the first contact directly in front of your body rather than over the net.
  • High Self-Set: Set your second ball 6–8 feet high to give yourself adequate time to track footwork and adjust your hitting approach.
  • Controlled Wrist Snap (Attack): Keep your hitting arm high and snap your wrist over the top of the ball for topspin control, aiming directly at your partner's chest.
  • Partner Responsibility: This is a cooperative drill—hit balls your partner can dig, not unreturnable terminal kills.
  • Net Safety: Stay 3 feet off the centerline to prevent under-the-net landing collisions with your partner.
