Drill Objective
Develop consistent technique, court awareness, and team communication in ball control, setting through high-repetition game-like execution.
Drill Setup & Court Layout
- Players: Partners (2 players per ball)
- Equipment: 1 volleyball per pair
- Court Layout: Players stand 10–20 feet apart, facing each other.
- The setter positions closer to the net.
- The thrower stands about 10 feet away, ready to toss consistently.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- The thrower tosses the ball to the setter.
- The setter performs an overhead pass (set) back to the thrower.
- The thrower catches the ball and repeats the toss for controlled reps.
- Continue for 10–15 sets per round or 60 seconds before switching roles.
- Repeat with partners alternating as setter and thrower.
Variations & Progressions
- Add movement: The setter takes 2–3 steps laterally or backward before receiving the toss. The thrower adjusts toss location accordingly.
- Challenge accuracy: Place a target zone for the setter to direct the ball consistently.
Key Coaching Points
- Focus on clean hand contact and forming a proper triangle with thumbs and index fingers.
- Emphasize footwork into position before setting.
- Encourage setting with the entire body, not just the hands.
- Common Game Situation: Good hand positioning and control are vital for consistent sets in rallies.
