This volleyball drill emphasizes quick passing to the setter and consistent outside sets, improving tempo, accuracy, and player rotation in free ball situations.
Drill Setup- Players: 4 positions: right back passer, setter, outside hitter (catches sets), and tosser on opposite side
- Line: Additional players form a line behind the serving line waiting to rotate in as passers
- Court: Half-court or full-court setup, depending on group size
- Equipment: Volleyballs (2–3 minimum)
- Tosser initiates the drill with an easy toss to the right back passer.
- Passer makes a controlled pass to the setter, then follows their ball to become the new setter.
- Setter delivers a consistent set to the outside hitter, then follows the ball to become the new outside hitter.
- Outside hitter catches the set and bounce-passes it under the net to the tosser, then rotates to the back of the passer line.
- Tosser maintains tempo by quickly tossing the next ball with minimal delay.
- Suggested reps: Each player should complete 8–10 full rotations through all positions or run for 10–12 minutes total.
- Tougher Tosses: The Tosser serves or tosses tougher balls to challenge passers.
- Live Attack: Instead of catching, the outside hitter tips or rolls the ball back over the net.
- Time Pressure: Run drill with a countdown (e.g., get 30 successful pass-set sequences in 3 minutes).
- Emphasize quick transitions and following the ball to the next role.
- Encourage fast but controlled passing to allow the setter consistency.
- Remind setters to square shoulders to the target and deliver a hittable set.
- Tosser should maintain a fast pace to keep players engaged and moving.
- Common Game Situation: Reinforces free ball passing and setter rhythm needed to run an effective outside attack in real matches.
This is a great tempo and ball control drill for younger and advanced teams alike, keeping everyone engaged and moving.
