Serve Receive Transition to Hitting Drill

This drill trains players to handle serve receive under pressure and immediately transition into attacking. It emphasizes the relationship between passing accuracy and quality sets while reinforcing communication and coverage.

Drill Setup

  • Players: 2 groups of 5 per side (3 passers, 1 setter, 1 server)
  • Court: Full court with standard serve and receive setup
  • Equipment: Volleyballs, net

Drill Instructions

  1. One team begins with a serve to the receiving side.
  2. The receiving team uses 3 passers to control the serve and send it to the setter.
  3. The passer who makes the pass receives the set from the setter and transitions into hitting.
  4. Hitter may call “outside, middle, or back” to signal teammates to cover.
  5. After the rally ends, alternate serving sides to repeat the sequence.
  6. Suggested reps: Run for 12–15 minutes or until each player has completed 8–10 passes and hits.

Drill Variations

  • Scoring System: Award 1 point for each successful kill; -1 for errors.
  • Competitive: Play first to 10 points with teams alternating serves.
  • Advanced: Add blockers to increase difficulty and force hitters to make smart attacking choices.
