Volleyball Serve Receive Drill with Two Servers

This drill trains players to handle short serves while reinforcing quick positioning, communication, and accuracy in serve receive. It emphasizes passing control to the target and creates game-like scoring pressure by rewarding consistency and penalizing errors.

This volleyball drill improves serve receive by challenging players to pass short serves consistently to a target while rotating positions.

Drill Setup

  1. Players: 3 passers, 2 servers, 1 target, additional players in waiting lines
  2. Court: Full court with emphasis on short serve zones
  3. Equipment: Volleyballs, net
  4. Roles: Servers initiate play, passers receive, target collects and resets, waiting players rotate in

Drill Instructions

  1. Two servers alternate serving short to the passer group of three.
  2. Passers must pass the ball to the target at the net.
  3. Scoring: +1 point for a successful pass to the target. –1 point for a missed serve or a reception error (ball not playable by the target).
  4. After both servers have served once (a total of 2 serves), the entire group rotates positions following the arrows.
  5. Extra players rotate in as servers or passers as needed.
  6. Continue until the team reaches a set number of points (e.g., 15–20 points) or for a set duration (5–7 minutes per round).

Drill Variations

  • Team Competition: Instead of rotating players individually, divide into teams of three passers. Each team competes to reach a set number of successful passes first.
  • Zone Challenge: Servers aim for specific short zones to increase passer anticipation.
  • Error Pressure: Instead of -1 points, assign consequences for errors (e.g., 5 push-ups or a quick sprint).

Drill Coaching Points

  • Communication: Encourage loud, early calls for every ball.
  • Anticipation: Read the server’s toss, arm swing, and body angle to anticipate serve location.
  • Movement: Stay low, balanced, and take quick first steps forward on short serves.
  • Passing Technique: Maintain a firm platform and direct passes consistently to the target.
  • Game-Like Focus: Reinforce the importance of serve receive as the first touch that sets up offense.
This drill is ideal for serve receive practice under pressure, with built-in scoring that keeps players focused and competitive.
