This volleyball drill emphasizes the importance of first-swing sideouts, encouraging aggressive offense and strong teamwork against live serves.

Drill Setup

  • Players: Two full teams on the court (6v6 or adjusted for numbers)
  • Court: Full court with normal rotations
  • Equipment: Volleyballs, net, scoreboard or counters
  • Roles: One team serves, the other attempts to sideout; rally is played live

Drill Instructions

  1. Teams line up in standard game rotations.
  2. The first team serves the ball into play.
  3. The receiving team attempts to sideout on their first swing (pass → set → attack).
  4. If the receiving team wins the rally on their first attack, they score a point.
  5. If they fail to sideout on the first swing (blocked, dug, or error), the serving team scores a point.
  6. Continue alternating serves and playing out rallies.
  7. Play for a set amount of time (e.g., 10–12 minutes) or until one team reaches a predetermined score (e.g., 15 or 21).

Drill Variations

  • Scoring Adjustment: Change the scoring system (easier for younger teams, harder for advanced groups).
  • Targeted Sideout: Require a specific hitter (middle, outside, or back row) to take the first swing.
  • Serve Pressure: Award bonus points for aces or forcing reception errors.

Drill Coaching Points

  • Aggressive First Swing: Encourage attackers to hit with confidence rather than tipping.
  • Serve Receive Quality: Stress accurate passes to give the setter multiple attacking options.
  • Teamwork: Players must communicate and stay disciplined in their rotations.
  • Setter Choices: Ensure setters distribute sets effectively to maximize first-swing opportunities.
  • Common Game Situation: Replicates the high-pressure sideout battle in matches where the first swing often determines the outcome of rallies.

This is a competitive, game-like drill best used in the second half of practice to simulate real match pressure and reinforce the importance of first-ball sideouts.
