Drill Objective
Build continuous 3-player pass-set-hit chemistry, court movement, and positional rotation across the net in a high-touch cooperative setting.
Drill Setup & Court Layout
- Players: 3 players per side (6 total): 1 Defender (Left Back / Zone 5), 1 Setter (Zone 2/3), and 1 Attacker (Left Front / Zone 4).
- Court: Full court with standard net.
- Equipment: 1 ball in play, extra balls with the coach at the referee stand.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Initiation: The coach or Left Back on Side A tosses a free ball across to Left Back on Side B.
- Pass to Setter: Left Back digs/passes high and controlled to the setter stationed at the net.
- Set to Left Front: The setter squares and delivers a repeatable, high set to the Left Front hitter at Zone 4.
- Controlled Attack: Left Front attacks a controlled down-ball or roll shot over the net directly into the opposing Left Back defender on Side A.
- Position Rotation: Immediately after attacking, Left Front rotates to Left Back; Left Back moves to Setter; Setter rotates to Attacker.
- Sustain the Rally: Side A continues the exact 3-touch sequence and rotates in rhythm. Aim for 15–20 consecutive touches without a drop.
Variations & Progressions
- Two-Side Simultaneous: Run triangle groups on both the left and right sides of the net simultaneously to maximize court space and player engagement.
- Defensive Scramble Touch: Allow the defender to dig anywhere on court, requiring the setter and hitter to communicate and hustle out-of-system.
- Competitive Match Play: After a 5-ball cooperative warm-up, switch to live competitive play to 7 points with full jumps.
Key Coaching Points
- Dig High and Off the Net: Defenders should target a pass 5–6 feet off the net to give the setter space to work without being crowded by the tape.
- Early Communication on Rotation: Call out rotation switches ('Switch!', 'Rotate!') immediately as the ball crosses the net so players are set before the next contact.
- Attacker Control & Placement: Attackers must prioritize placement into the defender's midline—do not swing for terminal kills during cooperative phase.
- Stay on Balls of Feet: All 6 players must maintain dynamic, active defensive postures rather than standing upright between rotations.
