This drill helps players develop consistent jump serve mechanics while learning to control arm swing direction based on coach cues. By responding to “up” or “down” calls, athletes practice serving with accuracy and deception to specific target zones.

Drill Setup- Players: Two serving lines with players rotating in
- Coaches: One coach per line standing inside the court
- Court: Full court with end line emphasis
- Equipment: Volleyballs, net
- Roles: Coach tosses and cues serve direction; players perform jump serves
- Coach stands just inside the court with left foot on the end line.
- Coach tosses a low ball (antennae height) slightly in front of the server.
- Server performs a jump serve approach from behind the end line.
- As the server jumps, the coach calls “Up” or “Down”:
Up: Server finishes swing with thumb up, directing the ball left.
Down: Server finishes swing with thumb down, directing the ball right or down the line. - Server completes swing, lands inside the court, and rotates to the back of the line.
- Suggested reps: Each server completes 6–8 serves per round, with 2–3 rounds per session (10–12 minutes total).
- Focused Training: Work with one server at a time for detailed feedback.
- Rotation System: Run servers through in quick succession for higher reps.
- Target Zones: Place cones or markers on the court for servers to aim at while executing cues.
- Thumb Check: Coach and server verify thumb position after swing to ensure correct technique.
- Approach Mechanics: Maintain consistent toss and explosive jump behind the end line.
- Arm Swing Control: Emphasize follow-through based on cue direction.
- Consistency Over Power: Build accuracy first, then increase serving speed.
- Common Game Situation: Prepares players to use jump serves strategically, directing serves into seams, lines, or weak passers.
