Volleyball 3v3 Drill - Reading the Block

This drill helps players develop the ability to read blockers, recognize when to attack aggressively, and adjust their offensive strategy. It builds awareness, quick reactions, and communication between passer, setter, and hitter.

Drill Setup

  • Players: Two teams of 3 (3v3).
    Team A (Offense): Passer, setter, hitter.
    Team B (Defense): 2 blockers, 1 passer.
  • Equipment: Rack of volleyballs for continuous play.
  • Court Layout: Standard half-court 3v3 setup.

Drill Instructions

  1. Coach initiates the drill with a free ball toss over the net to the offensive team.
  2. As the ball is tossed, the coach calls out whether the defense should block or pull off the net.
  3. Offensive team passes, sets, and attacks, reacting to the defensive decision.
  4. Defensive team plays the rally with 2 blockers and a passer.
  5. Continue until rally ends.
  6. Rotate roles after a set number of rallies.
  7. Suggested: Play for 10–12 rallies per group or 3–4 minutes before switching sides.

Drill Variations

  • Allow the defensive team to choose freely whether to block or not, forcing the offense to read cues.
  • Run the drill with focus on the blockers, emphasizing hand positioning, timing, and communication.
  • Play a continuous scoring game to 10 points, with offense only scoring if they read and execute correctly.
