This volleyball defense drill trains players to move aggressively and touch 10 balls while reading hitters and reacting quickly to attacks.

Drill Setup

  • Players: 3 hitting lines, 1 setter, 1 defender
  • Court: Full court or half court, depending on space and group size
  • Equipment: Volleyballs, net
  • Roles: Coach tosses to setter, setters set attackers, hitters attack to challenge defender

Drill Instructions

  1. Coach initiates play with a toss to the setter.
  2. Setter can set any hitter from the three hitting lines.
  3. Hitter executes a full approach and swing, aiming to score past the defender.
  4. Defender’s goal is to make contact with the ball (dig, touch, or control).
  5. Drill continues until the defender successfully touches 10 balls, after which they rotate out.
  6. Suggested reps: Each defender completes 10 touches, then rotate so all players get at least 2–3 rounds.

Drill Variations

  • Add More Defenders: Increase difficulty by including multiple defenders.
  • Setter Dump Option: Allow the setter to dump the ball over to force defender adjustments.
  • Hitter Rotation: Use only 2 hitting lines to focus on specific hitter/setter combinations.

Drill Coaching Points

  • Defensive Aggression: Defenders must be ready to move and commit to every ball.
  • Reading Hitters: Encourage defenders to anticipate swing direction based on approach and shoulder angle.
  • Ball Contact: Focus on making clean contact, not just reaching.
  • Setter Control: Setters should vary set locations and tempos.
  • Common Game Situation: Replicates rallies where defenders must constantly read unpredictable attacks and stay aggressive.

This drill is excellent for defensive conditioning and awareness, and works well early in practice to set an aggressive defensive tone.
