Volleyball Down Ball Drill: Partner Pass and Down Balls

This drill helps players improve passing accuracy and controlled down ball hitting. By working in small groups, athletes practice teamwork, footwork, and communication, while learning to transition from pass to down ball execution.

This volleyball drill develops ball control through passing and down ball hitting in small groups, making it an effective warm-up for game-like rallies.

Drill Setup

  • Players: Groups of 3 (tosser, passer, hitter)
  • Court: Half or full court, net optional
  • Equipment: Volleyballs, net (optional for progressions)
  • Roles: Tosser feeds ball, passer receives, hitter executes down ball

Drill Instructions

  1. Tosser stands on one side of the net and tosses the ball over to the passer.
  2. Passer delivers a controlled pass into the air.
  3. The hitter moves into position and executes a down ball back across the net to the tosser.
  4. Rotate roles after a set number of reps (e.g., every 5–7 contacts each).
  5. Continue until all players cycle through each role.
  6. Suggested reps: Run 3–4 rounds of 5–7 minutes, depending on group size and warm-up needs.

Drill Variations

  • No Net: Perform the drill on one side of the court without the net for beginner focus.
  • Overhead Passing: Require the passer to use overhead passes instead of forearm passes.
  • Multiple Groups: Run two or more groups simultaneously to maximize touches.

Drill Coaching Points

  • Hitter’s Movement: Ensure hitters get into correct position before swinging.
  • Passing Accuracy: Passers should focus on height and control to allow a good down ball setup.
  • Communication: Players must call the ball clearly on every touch. Progression to Game: Emphasize proper mechanics as if the down ball were an in-game free ball.
  • Common Game Situation: Prepares players to transition from defense to offense using controlled down balls that mimic free-ball situations in matches.

This is a fundamental ball control warm-up drill perfect for early practice to get players moving, talking, and executing clean mechanics.
