Drill Setup- Players: 6 players on the court in defensive positions, 1 hitter at left front, setter at target
- Coach: Positioned with a supply of volleyballs to initiate free balls
- Court: Full court
- Equipment: Volleyballs, net
- Coach initiates by tossing a free ball into the defensive side.
- Setter calls “Free ball!” and transitions quickly to the net.
- Defensive players transition into their proper free-ball base positions.
- Coach directs the free ball toward one player’s defensive zone.
- Player calls the ball, executes a controlled pass to the setter.
- Setter sets a high outside ball to the left-front hitter.

- Suggested reps: Each player should complete 8–10 passes per round, with the drill lasting 6–8 minutes.
- Live Attack: Instead of catching, the hitter takes a full approach and attacks the ball.

- Pressure Drill: Run timed rounds where the team must complete a certain number of perfect passes before the timer ends.
- Transition Speed: Emphasize quick movement into correct positions.
- Communication: Setter or team must loudly call “Free ball!” every time.
- Pass Accuracy: Passers should aim for the setter’s hands at the target position.
- Setter Movement: Encourage the setter to arrive early and square shoulders to the target.
- Common Game Situation: Replicates in-game free ball scenarios where quick transition and a controlled first pass can lead to a successful attack.
This is an ideal mid-practice drill to reinforce team communication and transition efficiency before moving on to more advanced offenses.
