This volleyball serving drill challenges players to serve accurately to all six court zones, improving precision and tactical serving under pressure.
Drill Setup- Players: Two teams, each starting on opposite serving lines
- Court: Full court, with each zone (1–6) designated as targets
- Equipment: Two volleyballs per team, net
- Roles: One player serves, one player sits in the target zone, others wait in line to serve
- Team A starts behind the serving line with one teammate sitting in Zone 1 on the opposite court.
- Servers alternate, attempting to serve the ball directly to their seated teammate.
- When the seated player catches a serve, they return to the serving line, and the successful server moves to sit in Zone 2.
- Continue this process until the team has successfully served to all six zones in order.
- Team B runs the same challenge simultaneously from the opposite side.
- First team to complete all six zones wins the round.
- Suggested reps: Run 2–3 games, each lasting about 8–10 minutes depending on serving consistency.
- Targeted Practice: Limit serves to weaker zones (e.g., short Zone 4 or deep Zone 1).
- Advanced Challenge: If a serve is missed, the team must start back at Zone 1.
- Time Trial: Race against the clock to complete all six zones as fast as possible.
- Serving Mechanics: Emphasize consistent toss, contact, and follow-through.
- Focus on Accuracy: Players should aim for control over power to hit zones consistently.
- Game Awareness: Discuss how different serving zones impact opponent offensive options.
- Encourage Competition: Keep score or run relays to increase intensity.
- Common Game Situation: Replicates tactical serving where players must target specific passers or zones to disrupt offensive rhythm.
This is a competitive, accuracy-focused drill that works well in the middle or end of practice to keep players engaged while sharpening serving placement.
