Volleyball Ball Control Drill: Back Row Attacks

By rotating positions, athletes gain experience in both setting and attacking while building teamwork and offensive consistency.

This volleyball drill improves ball control and communication while training players to execute purposeful back row attacks to specific court zones.

Drill Setup

  • Players: 1 setter and 1 middle back per side, with lines of players behind each middle back
  • Court: Full court, focusing on back row attacks from the middle back position
  • Equipment: Volleyballs, net
  • Roles: Coach initiates, middle backs pass and attack, setters set, lines rotate players in

Drill Instructions

  1. Coach begins the drill with a free ball or down ball to one side.
  2. The middle back receives and passes to the setter.
  3. Setter delivers a set back to the middle back.
  4. Middle back executes a controlled back row attack directed at the opposing middle back.
  5. Opposite side repeats the same sequence.
  6. Players rotate by following their ball but staying on their own side:
    Middle back → Setter
Setter → End of the line
End of line → Middle back
  7. Continue rally exchanges for a set number of contacts (e.g., 20–25 contacts) or by time (e.g., 3–5 minutes per round).

Drill Variations

  • Permanent Setter: Use a dedicated setter on each side for more consistent setting.
  • Zone Targeting: Require hitters to attack specific backcourt zones (e.g., deep corner or seam).
  • Tempo Variation: Increase pace by having the coach initiate faster free balls.

Drill Coaching Points

  • Purposeful Attacking: Remind players to aim their back row attacks at specific zones.
  • Communication: Loud calls for every ball to ensure clean transitions.
  • Control Over Power: Focus on accurate, playable swings rather than maximum speed.
  • Footwork: Middle backs should approach with good timing for controlled attacks.
  • Common Game Situation: Trains players for back row attacking opportunities during rallies where the setter relies on backcourt offense.

This drill is ideal for developing ball control with offensive intent, making it great for mid-practice when focusing on rhythm and attack consistency.
