Volleyball Middle Back Defensive Positioning and Movement
Activity Details
Practice Coach Notes:
Focus on defensive positioning, moving fluidly to cover different angles, and getting into a ready stance.
Key Objective: Develop consistent technique, court awareness, and team communication in warm-up, defense, passing, fitness through high-repetition game-like execution.

Drill Setup & Court Layout

  • Players: 1 middle back defender, 2 hitters, additional players to shag balls
  • Equipment: Volleyballs, cones or floor markers, pollyspot marker
  • Court Layout:
Place the middle back at the baseline in the center.
Set a pollyspot at the starting position.
Place two markers 5–7 feet apart from the baseline (left and right zones).
Position two hitters at the net, one on each sideline, with a supply of balls.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. On the coach’s command, the middle back makes an arching run into the right defensive zone in low posture.
  2. As the defender arrives, the right-side hitter attacks a ball into that zone.
  3. Middle back passes the ball using proper forearm passing technique back into play.
  4. Defender immediately sprints around the starting cone and makes another arching run into the left defensive zone.
  5. Left-side hitter attacks, and the middle back again returns the ball with a forearm pass.
  6. Continue alternating sides for 8–10 reps per defender, or for a 60-second timed round before rotating players.
  7. Shaggers collect balls to keep the drill fast-paced.

Key Coaching Points

  • Stress quick, arched movements into defensive zones.
  • Reinforce low body posture and balanced footwork.
  • Encourage reading hitter cues and anticipating attack angles.
  • Common Game Situation: Middle back defenders must often move laterally to cover both sidelines, making this drill realistic for defending hard-driven attacks and tips.

Activity #2

Volleyball Defense Drill: Touch Ten

Skill Development • 25 min
Volleyball Defense Drill: Touch Ten
Activity Details
Practice Coach Notes:
Drill focuses on digging techniques and quick reactions to hitter arm swings. Emphasize reading the hitter's body language.
Key Objective: Develop consistent technique, court awareness, and team communication in defense, hitting, middle hitter, outside hitter, passing, setting through high-repetition game-like execution.

Drill Setup & Court Layout

  • Players: 3 hitting lines, 1 setter, 1 defender
  • Court: Full court or half court, depending on space and group size
  • Equipment: Volleyballs, net
  • Roles: Coach tosses to setter, setters set attackers, hitters attack to challenge defender

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Coach initiates play with a toss to the setter.
  2. Setter can set any hitter from the three hitting lines.
  3. Hitter executes a full approach and swing, aiming to score past the defender.
  4. Defender’s goal is to make contact with the ball (dig, touch, or control).
  5. Drill continues until the defender successfully touches 10 balls, after which they rotate out.
  6. Suggested reps: Each defender completes 10 touches, then rotate so all players get at least 2–3 rounds.

Key Coaching Points

  • Defensive Aggression: Defenders must be ready to move and commit to every ball.
  • Reading Hitters: Encourage defenders to anticipate swing direction based on approach and shoulder angle.
  • Ball Contact: Focus on making clean contact, not just reaching.
  • Setter Control: Setters should vary set locations and tempos.
  • Common Game Situation: Replicates rallies where defenders must constantly read unpredictable attacks and stay aggressive.

This drill is excellent for defensive conditioning and awareness, and works well early in practice to set an aggressive defensive tone.

Volleyball Coverage Drill
Activity Details
Practice Coach Notes:

  • Coach: Positioned with volleyballs to initiate play
  • Court: Full court

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Coach tosses a ball to the receiving side, initiating play.
  2. The receiving side runs a pass-set-hit attack.
  3. With 6 blockers across the net, most attacks will be blocked back.
  4. The receiving team must cover the hitter and dig up the blocked ball.
  5. Continue rally until the ball is dead.
  6. Encourage the receiving team to earn 3 successful coverage plays in a row before rotating positions.
  7. Suggested reps: Run for 8–12 minutes or until each player has rotated through all positions at least twice.

Key Coaching Points

  • Emphasize coverage positioning: players must read the hitter and anticipate block rebounds.
  • Reinforce hustle and quick reactions to save blocked balls.
  • Encourage loud communication during cover situations.
  • Hitters should be reminded that coverage is part of the attack plan.
  • Common Game Situation: Replicates live matches where hitters frequently face double or triple blocks, requiring teammates to cover and extend rallies.

This is a perfect team coverage drill for teaching the importance of anticipation and teamwork after an attack.

  • Roles: Coach (or player) directs balls into corners, defensive player pursues and makes contact

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Mark the four corners of one side of the court with tape.
  2. Defensive player starts in the middle of the receiving court in a ready position.
  3. Coach (or player) stands on a box across the net and hits, tips, or tosses balls into the four corners.
  4. Defensive players must make contact with every ball before it hits the ground.
  5. If a ball lands untouched in a corner, assign a penalty (e.g., -1 point or conditioning).
  6. Adjust difficulty: a slower pace emphasizes controlled contacts, while afaster pace turns it into conditioning.
  7. Run each round for 30–45 seconds of continuous reps or 10–12 balls per player, then rotate.

Key Coaching Points

  • Ready Position: Stay low, weight forward, and balanced on the balls of the feet.
  • Quick Reaction: Explode toward the ball with first-step speed.
  • Communication: Call the ball loudly with every defensive move.
  • Aggressiveness: Encourage relentless effort to keep the ball alive.
  • Coach Control: Vary speed and placement to adjust difficulty and conditioning.
  • Common Game Situation: Prepares defenders for chasing down tips, corner shots, and deflections in extended rallies.
This drill is excellent for building both defensive hustle and conditioning, as it provides players with game-like pressure to cover space aggressively.

  4. Tagged player enters the drill immediately, maintaining only 3 players on the court inside the 10-foot line at a time.
  5. Rally scoring is used to track points, with a set goal (e.g., play to 10 or 15).
  6. Suggested reps: Run 2–3 games of 8–10 minutes each, ensuring all players get multiple rotations.

Key Coaching Points

  • Hustle: Players must sprint to tag teammates and enter quickly.
  • Communication: Call every ball clearly to avoid confusion.
  • Technique: Emphasize controlled passes, clean sets, and accurate tips to target areas.
  • Awareness: Ensure only 3 players remain active inside the 10-foot line.
