Back Row Attack

An attack executed by a back-row player who takes off from completely behind the 3-meter (10-foot) line before contacting the ball above the height of the net.

Back Set

A set delivered backward over the setter's head to an attacker running an approach behind them, typically in Zone 2 or to the right-side hitter.

Backcourt

The area of the court between the attack line (10-foot line) and the endline where back-row defenders and passers operate.

Ball Handling Error

An official penalty whistled by the referee for an illegal contact, including a double touch, caught ball, lift, or thrown ball on a pass, set, or attack.

Beach Dig

A defensive recovery in outdoor or sand volleyball executed with open hands using rigid, cupped fingers to control a hard-driven ball without a lift or carry violation.

Bic

An accelerated, low-trajectory back-row attack set to the middle-back attacker (Zone 6) operating from behind the 10-foot line, arriving in-tempo before the block can close.

“When the pass is on the money, feed the Bic to keep their middle blocker pinned down.”

Block

A defensive play performed close to the net by one or more front-row players reaching above the net tape to intercept, deflect, or stuff an opponent's attack.

Block Shadow

The area on the court directly behind the blockers that is shielded from a direct, hard-driven spike by the block's physical wall.

Bow-and-Arrow Mechanics

The classic hitting arm preparation where the non-dominant arm points at the ball while the hitting elbow is drawn back like an archer's bow.

Bread and Butter

A team's most reliable, trusted offensive play or tactical combination executed during crunch time when an immediate sideout is required.

Bump

The foundational underhand ball-handling technique of playing the ball off the joined forearms; standardly referred to as a forearm pass.

Bump Pass

Passing the ball with an underhand platform formed by interlocking hands and extended elbows to direct the ball cleanly to the target.

Bunch Defense

A blocking alignment where all three front-row blockers start clustered near the center of the court to double-team quicks and sprint laterally to the pins.
